The Decorative Thread Experience
One day workshop
All skill levels, Machine quilting experience helpful - Technique: Sewing machine required
Thread may have once been considered just a basic necessity of sewing, but happily it's now available in so many luscious colors and types that it has become sheer pleasure to use. Steering your way through the sea of threads available can be a time consuming and somewhat daunting task. Melody will guide you through the learning process so your sewing will become fun and fancy.
Supply List
- Sewing machine (bring machine manual plus all attachments including extension table)
- Darning foot (Necessary for free-motion quilting. Please check your accessory box carefully before coming to class)
- Walking foot (Necessary for successful straight line quilting, frequently an extra item)
- Extra bobbins, 4 to 8
- Machine needles:
Embroidery 75/11 & 90/14
Metafil/Metallica 80/12
Top Stitch 80/12 & 90/14
- Thread (one spool each, any color):
100% cotton regular sewing thread
Machine embroidery thread
Rayon thread
Light weight metallic thread
Flat film polyester thread (Superior Threads; Glitter or Sulky; Holoshimmer)
Nylon or polyester bobbin thread - medium gray is a good choice(Superior Threads; The Bottom
Line or Mettler; Metrolene) Heavy Weight thread for bobbin stitching (SuperiorThreads; Razzle Dazzle, YLI; Candlelight or Pearl Crown Rayon, DMC; #5 or 8 Pearl Cotton, Maderia; Glamour or Décor, Kreinik; Medium braid, etc)
- Yarn or braid for couching
- Size 1 safety pins (1" long, 'bent' pins work best)
- Thread Scissors
- Permanent marker
- Large eyed hand needle (for hiding the ends of the thread)
- (8) 14 -16" square muslin
- (4) 14 -16" squares batting: at least 80% cotton preferred or low loft polyester
Optional, but recommended
- Extra bobbin case (necessary to adjust tension for very heavy and light threads)
- Couching or braiding foot
Optional, but nice
- Lamp, if you need one
- Chair cushion
